What is stevia?

Two drops in your coffee and that's it! Stevia comes from the leaves of a plant called Stevia rebaudiana, originally from South America. The sweet substance in it is called steviol glycosides, and it is about 200 to 300 times sweeter than sugar.

How many calories are in stevia?

Zero. Because you use very small drops, and the substance itself provides no energy.

Does stevia raise blood sugar?

No. It has no sugar and no carbohydrate, so it does not affect blood sugar, and that is why the glycemic index does not apply to it at all.

Why does it taste a little bitter?

That is the nature of the substance itself, and it shows more when you use more. So:

  • You can start with one drop and add more to taste.
  • If you don't like the taste, you can try a product mixed with erythritol; its taste is closer to sugar.

Where to use it

  • Coffee, tea and mate: two drops are enough for a cup.
  • Yoghurt and oats: instead of honey.
  • Homemade juices and lemonade: instead of sugar.
  • In baking you need to be careful, because sugar gives cakes volume and texture, and stevia does not.

Alternatives and figures for comparison

  • A teaspoon of sugar (4 g): about 16 calories.
  • Two drops of stevia: 0 calories.
