Betaine HCl (with Pepsin)
Digestion & comfortFunction & benefits
A source of hydrochloric acid that briefly raises stomach acidity; a study in healthy volunteers suggests it quickly re-acidified the stomach after drug-induced low acid, which supports protein digestion and pepsin activity in people with low stomach acid.
Dosage & how to use
| Recommended dose | 350–650 mg (one capsule) with a protein-rich meal |
| Best time to take | In the middle of the meal with sips of water; do not open or chew the capsule |
| Frequency | With protein meals only |
Best forms to choose
Betaine HCl capsules, often with the enzyme pepsin.
Important warnings
Not for use with an active stomach or duodenal ulcer or gastritis
Stop at once if you feel burning or warmth in your stomach
Recurring heartburn needs a doctor's check before you use it
Drug interactions
Important warning: never combine it with NSAID painkillers (ibuprofen, aspirin) or corticosteroids, because of the risk of stomach irritation; it is pointless alongside acid-reducing drugs (such as omeprazole).
