Vitamin B-Complex (Active Methylated)
Energy & nervous systemFunction & benefits
The eight B vitamins act as coenzymes that turn carbohydrates, fats and proteins into energy; they contribute to normal energy-yielding metabolism, normal functioning of the nervous system, normal red blood cell formation and the reduction of tiredness and fatigue (EFSA).
Dosage & how to use
| Recommended dose | 1 capsule daily (B6 no more than 12 mg) |
| Best time to take | With breakfast; best avoided in the evening as it can increase alertness |
| Frequency | Once daily |
Best forms to choose
Bioactive forms: methylcobalamin (B12), methylfolate (5-MTHF) instead of synthetic folic acid, and pyridoxal-5-phosphate (P5P) for vitamin B6.
Important warnings
Bright yellow urine is normal and harmless, caused by excreted vitamin B2
EFSA 2023 upper limit: daily vitamin B6 should not exceed 12 mg to avoid damage to the peripheral sensory nerves
Drug interactions
Vitamin B6 can reduce the effect of levodopa in Parkinson's disease when it is taken without carbidopa. Metformin, birth control pills, some diuretics and acid-reducing drugs lower B12 and folate levels.
